Who Is SoCal Salty?

Salty_YT2_041812I’m just a guy who likes to fish.  I prefer to do it in the ocean, so I’m a salty.  I’ve done it most of my life, but that doesn’t make me an ‘expert’. When I fished in the south end of Puget Sound (Washington State) as a kid, my friends and I didn’t really know what we were doing. We just enjoyed the sights, and smells of the Sound, and camaraderie of good friends. I try to remind myself of that feeling on the inevitable days the fish don’t want to bite.  Today, I live in a different part of the country. Fishing techniques vary by species, time of year, location, depth and numerous other variables.  I’ll try to let you know what gear to bring, and when and how to use it.

I also like to cook and eat what I catch.  I’m fairly decent in the kitchen myself, but I also share my catch with friends and will show you how we prepared it.

Juj_2belindasFinally, I’m a dad and try to get my kids Jacob and Juliana out on the water as often as possible with me.  I like sharing time with them doing something other than being entertained by some electronic device.  I also think it’s important for them to know that real food isn’t something in a box that comes out of the freezer and goes into the microwave.

IMG_5971This blog is where I’ll share what I learn, so that you can enjoy your time on the water, come home with fish in your sack, and enjoy a good meal from your catch.

    • Hi CB, thanks for stopping by. Tell your niece I’d be happy to take her and her dad out anytime.

  2. Just saw your parents over the Easter Weekend, they came to our house for a bbq. It was nice to see them. I did not realize you were an avid fisherman. I don’t fish saltwater too much, but I do alot of freshwater fishing, mainly for trout.
We also fish up in your old neck of the woods (Washington) about 3-4 times a year for salmon, steelhead and sturgeon. We fish primarily on the Columbia, Cowlitz, Skykomish, Naselle and Elochoman Rivers. If you ever need a fishing buddy give me a call. Website looks really good. Do the bonito still come into Kings Harbor? My friends and I use to fish for them 15 years ago with light bass tackle and it was a blast!!!

    • Eric, yeah I saw your parents while my folks were visiting. I was actually in San Diego fishing that Sunday, otherwise I would’ve loved to come by and talk fishing with you. I’ll hit you up in email and give you my contact info. Would love to fish with you. Awesome pics your parents had of the big salmon you’ve caught!

Re: bonito, didn’t really happen last year since the water was so cold, but I’ve seen ’em down there. That’s a great thrill for fishing off the pier for sure.

  3. SoCal Salty Rocks!!!!!!

    • What happened to you? Missed an awesome day!

      • I wanted to head out Thursday and plans didn’t go as planned. I headed out Friday, yesterday, got on the daily double met ur bud Jason. I got some flix on the boat as well. I’ll shoot those over to you. I got a bunch of small ones. Didn’t get a single bite from anything that was decent sized. I kept the little guys so I have a reason to use the deep fryer! Gotta love them deep fried fish.

  4. Hi Joe,
