Weekend Wrapup – Monday, Feb 4th

Rockfish and Yellowtail

Going into the weekend, there was a lot of anticipation.  A handful of boats were due to head into Mexican water for the first time this year.  That they were going was significant because the boats hadn’t fished inside of 24 miles from the Mexican coast since July of last year, due to a dispute over the Mexican Fishing Visa.

One boat, the Fortune, out of Seaforth Landing, headed out Friday night for a day and half trip.  Twenty anglers were rewarded with limits of rockfish, big whitefish, and some fat lingcod.  Because of the successful run, the Fortune will head out again this coming Friday.

The more anticipated trip for me though were the inaugural runs this weekend of 3/4 day boat the San Diego (also out of Seaforth).  I’d been hearing various private boater reports of yellowtail at the Coronado Islands and the San Diego would be the first sportie to go out and chase them.  Well a yellowtail was caught in San Diego this weekend, but it wasn’t the SD who got it.  It was an angler on the New Seaforth that got a nice 30lb yellow, on the yoyo jig, off La Jolla.  I understand they had some other ones hanging, but only one was boated.  I’m sure Capt. Ryan Bostian on the SD will find them soon, but kudos to the NSF.

Halibut

The hot boat had been the Native Sun, running their Pot of Gold Halibut Derby.  Thursday they got 3.  Friday they added 2 more.  Saturday they pulled another hat trick, with a big close to 28 lbs!  Naturally, after a run like that, they got a cool hand Sunday, when Jake, Juliana and I decided to ride the boat.  No legals for the trip.  Just a few sandbass to save the day from being a total skunk.

A couple sportboats found halibut this weekend though.  The Daily Double out of Point Loma got one on Saturday.  Dana Wharf’s 3/4 day boat, the Sum Fun, scored one on Sunday.

Honestly, it’s not wide open, but there were a few nice highlights out there for those who tried.  It’s winter fishing in SoCal.  Be happy we enjoyed some sunny days on the water and didn’t fish through a hole in the ice 😉  Tight lines.
