Trip Report: Sunday AM New Del Mar

Got out Sunday morning with the kids.  The upcoming closure (rockfish shuts down Dec 31) is looming like a big rain cloud, so despite the busy holiday season, we wanted to get out for a quick one.  Gray, drizzly skies started off the day, but it cleared up and we got a nice day on the water.  The boat had a smattering of live squid, but we mostly fished the dead…strips or heads on standard double dropper loops.  When we did bust out the live squid, we tried to work the bottom, but most of the action was happening between 10-20 cranks off the bottom.  Jake and I did a bit of jig fishing, but it wasn’t working on Sunday.

We managed about 5 fish apiece.  I caught more, but lots of bocaccio, so I was only able to keep the 2 biggest ones.  Juj started off the day with the hot stick, including this 2 banger of belindas.  Jake and I played catchup the rest of the morning.  Jake had big fish between the 3 of us with about a 3 lb red.  Big fish for the boat was one legal ling.

As I’m writing this post, we are experiencing some big wind out there on the water.  Only 8 boats went out yesterday as a result…many breaking their day off short because of the conditions.  If you try to go, you should definitely call ahead to make sure they’ll be going out.  Tight lines!
