The 50 Fathom Rule

Not a cowcod…just a really big (8lbs!) red

Beginning this Thursday, November 1, the maximum depth that we will be allowed to fish in California waters is 50 fathoms or 300 feet.  This new regulation takes us up from the previous max of 60 fathoms.  This rule is (hopefully) temporary and is in response to reaching the bycatch limit of cowcod for 2012.  Cowcod are a protected species of rockfish that are typically found at 300 feet and lower.  All rockfishing will close at the end of the year, and then we’ll find out if we return to 60 fathoms when the season reopens in March of 2013.

Michelle Gandola of the Sportfishing Association of California (SAC) will send you a Google Earth file with all the 50 fathom waypoints for free if you request one.  Just email her at michelle.gandolasac@gmail.com

  1. We all should be using the releasers. (Private boaters and sportboats) If anyone can get videos of this happening, it will help the case. It has been proven they work. This is one of them. Channel Islands Sportfishing is going to start carrying them.

SAC is working hard to get everyone aware and educated.

    • That’s a great idea (to do a video of that). Let’s do it!
