Video: Eating The Heart Of A Tuna

As a follow-up to my post yesterday on Fishing Superstitions, I’ve been trying to track down the origin of eating the heart of a tuna the first time you catch one.  No one has been able to tell me yet where or how it started.  Some people have questioned whether or not it was really true or just a fishing tale.  Well, it’s definitely true.  I found several videos, on different boats of people eating tuna hearts, but this one was the best illustration of it (in my opinion).  It takes place on the Searcher, one of the long range boats out of San Diego.

What do you think?  Would you do it?  Can anyone tell me where it came from or how this tradition started?  Let me know.  Tight lines!

  1. So Salty what does Tuna heart taste like?

    • Don’t know yet, but I aim to find out next weekend!

  2. Good Luck!

  3. When I started hunting deer as a kid in Oregon, I was introduced to a similar tradition. “After you shoot it, you can eat the heart.” I “can” eat the heart? Gee, thanks. Here I’ve been sitting, wondering if you’d let me eat the heart, and now all my dreams are coming true!

It kind of tells you about the people I grew up with. They considered it a right of passage, and one I should be looking forward to. Eventually, I got my deer, but was not required to eat the heart. Thankfully, I wasn’t subjected to ridicule either.

I’d probably tackle a squishy tuna heart though. I’m not sure if I could jam my finger into the gill slit and remove the still beating organ from the fish however. That was a bit macabre for even me.

  4. If the deckhand goes in there and grabs it, I may not paint myself with it like the guy in the video, but I’ll throw down. Great to fish with you yesterday buddy. Nice to catch up. Take care

  5. This video alone may have spawned an idea for next years mancation…

    • Come on out! Also think about ICAST. I plan to spend some time fishing out there.

  6. I think it’s true, my cousin didn’t eat his 1st yellow tail heart. That day he caught his limit, he was so excited, he forgot. He’s been a jinx ever since. The half boat caught their limits on 25lbs yellow tail, he got none. Not even a bite, got one Bonita. We come home with a sack full of fish, he comes back with two. We went fishing for rock fish, he got one, we filled our limit and some, gave it to him. He missed the boat one time, wrong turn, when he got there, the boat was leaving. I can go on, but today demonstrate that he’s just jinx. He got on a boat, someone got drunk and fell, they turned to boat back to drop off the dummy, by the time they got to the bait tank, no bait, the boat turned around and called it a day. We ate our 1st yellow tail, we are just so lucky, getting every jackpot every time we go on, when there was no yellow biting, we landed monster yellow. When people caught one firecracker we got a 25lb. People said that fish just attracted to our line. I think it’s wise to eat your yellowtail heart.

  7. Correction: The boat that he was on was a full day, but only half the limit of anglers.

    • Thanks Anne. If you have a pic of this guy, please send it in!
