Feeling The Tingle

Andrew was hanging heaviest with his big grouper

You know that feeling?  That tingle up your spine because you see something big about to happen and the anticipation is killing you?  As I sit back recounting the day yesterday, listening to Let’s Talk Hookup, and reading the various boards, I’m definitely feeling it.  Let me tell you why…rockfishing is no longer the only game in town.  Hundreds (yes, I said HUNDREDS) of  ‘cudas were taken between the New Delmar and Spitfire out of MDR Sportfishing and also the Tradition out of Redondo.

I was riding the Electra out of Helgren’s Sportfishing in Oceanside.  I went down to fish for a taping of Sportsfishing With Dan Hernandez.  Dan asked me to come down, and I’ll be doing a guest post with a full trip report shortly.  The quick and dirty though is that we saw a lot of yellowtails!  It seemed like the entire Southern California boating community from OC and SD converged on San Clemente Island to chase the forkies on Saturday.  The only person on our boat to hookup was Dan himself, but the wily fish managed to break him off in the kelp.  We did however have a great day catching calico bass in the kelp and rockfish further out.  The jackpot winner on our boat was Andrew Deal with this huge bocaccio (aka salmon grouper).  The surprise of the day was the bounty of big, beautiful bankies we found.

I’ll let you know when the full trip report goes up at Dan’s site.  In the meantime, here’s your Monday gameplan…allergic sneezing, red eyes…oh that pollen count…morphs into a weird Spring cold.  You see where I’m going with this?  This week would be a good time.  Make it happen.  I’ll see you out there. Tight lines!

EDITORIAL NOTE: The Tradition reported 3 hookups and 1 boated YT at San Clemente Island yesterday!

I didn't win, but I did...OK 🙂

  1. I still think you guys have the COOLEST looking fish over there on the left coast!!! 🙂

    • I don’t know, I think your stripers are pretty awesome looking. Can’t wait to catch my first one of those.

      • Joe, you have to make a POINT of clearing some room during your NYC visit. Would be my pleasure having you as my guest to take a shot at them 🙂

  2. I would really love to to do that, but even if we don’t get to fish, would love to grab a beer and just meet you Paul. Somehow you found me in the first month I started writing the blog. I have to tip a few and talk fishing with you!
