Trip Report: Baja Rockfishing on the Daily Double (Feb 21)

Gaff Cam: click for latest video

After a week of heavy rain and wind, Monday was the first day that all of it cleared out.  It was a bright, sunny day.  The sea was calm with only mild swells.  As I mentioned in my previous post, everyone wanted to go big and Monday presented that opportunity.  Capt. Tony is the guy John A. was telling me about before…the skipper who likes to go deep drift rockfishing.  We were close to the normal spots just north of the Coronado Islands, just in deeper water…@450 ft.  At the first stop, I immediately saw some big reds come over the rail.  Tony said they didn’t mark well on the electronics, but that you often found the big ones in spots like this one.  It’s a small spot, so it was a lot of short drifts, split up between repositioning on the spot.  We were able to stay at the first spot most of the day and the fun continued.  Obviously, it was a situation where the expertise of the captain and crew made all the difference.

Call me “Rent Rod“, I didn’t fish my gear, opting to use John’s.  Speaking of John’s gear…it deserves and will get a full post.  This weekend, I had the privilege of seeing his workshop/tackle utopia and there’s too much to say and see for today.  For today, I’ll just let the pictures speak for themselves.  I also found another video from the Gaff Cam that turned out pretty nicely.  Click on the picture on the right to see it.

Thanks again to the crew of the Daily Double!  They work out of Point Loma Sportfishing.  We’re coming to the end of rockfish season.  The Daily Double departs daily at 9am for a half day of rockfishing.  It’s only $42.  Book a trip now and enjoy it while you can.

Listen to these guys, they are professionals

They did

They went home happy

First time on the ocean, and the guy in blue won the jackpot!

  1. You’re killing me with all of this fishing man!

I died laughing when the older gentleman got bumped in the head with the gaff cam. Watch it gramps , film crew coming through.

    • Yeah, the old salty wasn’t really down with the new Salty, but he played along. That crew was really cool and I’ll continue to work with them. We’ll both get better at getting the footage and then compiling it to make the finished product better.
